The Italian online and offline gambling regulator AAMS just revealed new data according to wish Italian online and offline casino ventures generated approximately 13% more revenues in 2012 than during 2011.

The AAMS revealed that in 2012 the Italian online and offline casino gaming market generated a total of €70.3 billion in revenues. This constitutes an increase of 13% compared to the results achieved by licensed gaming operators in 2011.

However despite the increase in revenues, online and offline operators generated slightly less profits due to new regulations that required them to significantly increase their payout percentages and implicitly be able to keep less money to themselves. Gross gaming revenue in 2012 was of €14 billion compared to €14.7 billion in 2011.

The biggest earner offline was the introduction of more than 15,000 new video lottery terminals by various offline operators and lotteries as well as offline sports betting during the Euro 2012 Football Championship as well as the 2012 London Olympics.

2012 also saw the launch of various new online gaming activities such as exchange betting, online slots and various types of bingo games. This resulted in an extremely large 174% increase in online gaming revenues that amounted to €10.6 billion.

Real money online slots were only launched by the AAMS during December 2012 and as such its effects are still not felt on the market. Online slots is usually the biggest earner at each online casino and now with the legalization of this game Italian operators are expected to generate even more revenues in 2013.

The biggest loser in 2012 was undoubtedly online poker. Online poker revenues were down 48% to €1.06 billion due to new regulations that require licensed Italian online poker sites to separate their Italian poker players and liquidity from international players. As a consequence, many Italian poker players decided to abandon the game altogether.

Nevertheless, the Italian online and offline gambling market achieved a great performance in 2012 which is expected to be repeated in 2013 as well. Despite hastily done regulations (especially in regards to online poker), the Italian online gaming market still can serve as an example to other countries that still did not legalize online casino games.
