Online gaming operator William Hill announced that it would leave the Greek online gaming market after last month the Greek Gaming Commission threatened offshore operators with severe legal sanctions in case they stay in the country.

The newest online gaming operator to leave Greece is no other than industry leader William Hill. The operator explained that it would leave the Greek market tonight due to legal and regulatory difficulties in the country.

William Hill posted the following message on its Greek website: "We regret to inform you that William Hill has decided to withdraw fully from providing services to the Greek market for legal reasons beyond our control by 23:59 Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012."

Last month the Greek Gaming Commission requested offshore online gaming companies to leave the Greek gaming market. Operators that refuse to comply would face severe legal sanctions including huge fines and prison sentences for key executives.

The deadline imposed by the Gaming Commission will expire tomorrow after which the state will launch legal procedures against companies that have refused to leave the market. The first online gaming company to leave Greece was Betfair.

At this moment Greece does not award online gaming licenses to offshore operators. At the same time, the Greek state-owned gaming monopoly OPAP is allowed to offer online gaming services to Greek citizens without a license. OPAP is exempted from the country's online gaming laws until 2030.

Major European online gaming operators and the EU trade bodies EGBA and RGA have submitted a complaint to the European Commission regarding the actions taken by Greece. According to them, Greece is violating EU laws by giving an unfair advantage to a state-owned venture over private companies.

But the operators and trade bodies in question also heavily criticize the European Commission for not taking action sooner in this case. Due to the EC's negligence, countries such as Greece are able to violate European Union regulations without any consequences.
