POKERSTARS REACHES AGREEMENT WITH ATLANTIC CITY CASINO

PokerStars announced that it managed to form a deal with the ownership of Atlantic Club Casino in New Jersey. PokerStars intends to take over the named casino in order to be able to apply for a New Jersey online poker license later on.

Late-2012 the rumor emerged that PokerStars was interested in the takeover of the New Jersey based Atlantic Club land-casino. Now PokerStars officially confirmed the story and explained that it managed to agree on a deal with Resorts International Holdings, the current owner of the casino.

However, the deal will still have to be evaluated by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. Based on the results of this evaluation and a hearing with the parties involved, the New Jersey Casino Control Commission will either approve or reject the deal.

In a joint statement PokerStars and Resorts International Holdings said that "The acquisition of the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel will secure up to 2,000 jobs and maintain the economic benefits the casino brings to New Jersey."

PokerStars' decision to acquire the casino is strongly linked with the New Jersey Assembly and Senate's recent decision to approve a legislation draft that legalizes intra-state online poker and online casino games. Once this law is implemented, New Jersey land-casinos will be able to apply for a license.

In case PokerStars will manage to take over Atlantic Club Casino then it will be the only foreign operator to be able acquire a US online poker and online casino license. Through this, PokerStars will be able to establish a base of operations in New Jersey and gradually work on further expansion.

However at this moment the adoption of New Jersey's new online casino and poker law is not yet finalized. Even though the bill was adopted by both the Senate and the Assembly, it will only enter into force if Governor Chris Christie will sign it into law.

But as we reported two days ago, so far Governor Christie ignored the issue which could mean that he considers not signing the bill into law. This scenario is not unlikely considering that in 2011 Christie vetoed a similar legislation even though it passed the vote both in the Assembly and Senate.
