　　Rocco Palumbo was relatively unknown when he made his way to the tables at this year's World Series of Poker. Palumbo, a poker pro from Genoa, Italy, represented his country well this week when he won a $1,500 buy-in, No-Limit Hold'em event.

　　Palumbo became just the sixth Italian ever to win a gold bracelet at the WSOP. Jeffrey Lisandro is perhaps the most notable of those winners, having fared well over his poker career. Palumbo is hoping he follows in the steps of Lisandro and other widely heralded Italian players.

　　The three day event that Palumbo won was not easy. The tournament began with nearly 3,000 players, and by the time the field was sifted down to one, Palumbo was $464,464 richer. Casual poker fans will get a chance to know Palumbo well, as his tournament win came right in front of ESPN cameras. The sports network will be airing the complete WSOP final table telecasts later this summer.

　　The World Series of Poker is heading for home, with 48 tournaments either finished or in their final stages. Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, and several other well-known poker stars have stolen the spotlight this year. Ivey was returning from a one-year hiatus after boycotting the WSOP in 2011.

　　One of the biggest events this year began on Sunday. The Poker Players Championship, featuring some of the top players in the world and a $50,000 buy-in, had 108 players start the tournament. Only 30 players remain, and it is Michael Mizrachi, the star of last year's WSOP, who holds the chip lead. Mizrachi is being chased by some of the biggest names in the game, including Andy Bloch, Lisandro, Hellmuth, and Ivey.

　　Next Sunday, the latest event will be unveiled at the WSOP. A $1 million buy-in, No-Limit tourney will commence, with the top players in the world competing in the event. Proceeds from the event will go to charity, but the players will still be playing for big money. The three-day event will be watched by millions of poker enthusiasts around the world.

　　The main event this year begins on July 7th, later than usual. Players that enter the main event will have to endure ten days of challenging play. All participants will be hoping to land a seat at the final table in November.
