The Dutch government issued a statement requesting European online casino operators to take part in a meeting on January 28th regarding the government's future plans to regulate the online casino market.

The new Dutch government coalition led by Prime Minister Mark Rutte has invited Europe's online gaming companies to take part in a meeting on January 28th. The meeting will offer operators' an opportunity to express their views in regards to the new online gambling law the government intends to implement soon.

Operators received the invitation in a letter written by the Dutch Gaming Commission. The letter requests the addressed companies to reflect on various issues such as online gaming taxes, player protection measures, number of licenses and more in order to discuss them at the meeting.

This move means that the Dutch government will - at least to some extent - listen to operators' feedback. This could help avoid problems such as those of very high taxes or lack of liquidity in countries - like France or Germany - that ignored operators' feedback.

If the Dutch government will indeed listen to operators' suggestions then the Dutch real money online gaming market might become an example to other European countries that are still confused and aren't sure about the proper approach to online casino regulation.

Talks regarding the regulation of real money online gaming began in the Netherlands as back as 2010 but at that time the ruling government intended to pursue a more protectionist approach. Operators' biggest fear was the implementation of an extremely disadvantageous taxation regime that would have forced them to leave the country.

However since then a new government coalition was formed that made it clear from the very beginning that it would regulate real money online gambling in a manner that would be fair to every party involved. The government first mentioned the legalization of online gambling in October 2012.

At the same time the Dutch Gaming Authority requested operators active in the country to leave the market until the new regulatory framework is implemented. Operators that complied will be looped upon favorably when licensing procedures will be launched while operators that stayed in the country will risk to be blacklisted.
