This week UK Culture Minister Hugh Robertson rejected a law proposal that aimed to limit the maximum amount players are allowed to bet in land-based betting and gaming shops. Minister Robertson explained that there is no evidence that links problem gambling to high-stakes betting shops.

Anti-gambling campaigners such as Labor Party MP David Lammy have recently called for new laws that limit the activity of land-based betting and gaming shops. The biggest problem according to anti-gambling activists is the fact that players are allowed to bet as much as ?100 per round in these shops.

MP David Lammy and his supporters claim that many citizens are able to lose serious amounts of money - often multiple thousand pounds - in the matter of minutes. They believe that high-stakes betting shops are the main reason for the spread of problem gambling.

Lammy believes that the government should seriously restrict and monitor the activities conducted by betting shops in the country. One of the measures Lammy and the Campaign for Fairer Gambling would like to see implemented is the reduction of the maximum bet per round from ?100 to just ?2.

However UK Culture Minister Hugh Robertson disagrees with these claims and argues that there's no evidence that proves that betting shops are directly responsible for problem gambling. As such, Minister Robertson rejected Lammy's suggestions, meaning that for now UK betting shops are safe.

Robertson said that the government will only modify its current gambling laws if there was new evidence that claims that betting shops are responsible for the spread of gambling addiction. In reality, there are already multiple studies that prove the opposite.

Also commenting on the issue, Ladbrokes representative Ciaran O'Brien explained that high-stakes betting shops don't produce problem gamblers because the average spend on a gaming machine is just under ?7. Likewise, the average price paid for a sports betting ticket is just ?8.40.

Additionally, it's extremely unlikely that the proposed limitations would have made any difference at all. If land-based betting shops wouldn't be able to offer bets over ?2, then the bulk of players would move online and would be able to play anyway without limitations.

While the regulations proposed by anti-gambling campaigners would have not made a difference in regards to gambling spending, they would have resulted in the closure of many land-based betting shops and as such would have killed thousands of jobs all over the country.
