Oscar Ling, special assistant to Malaysian MP Wong Ho Leng believes that illegal online gambling will eliminate the positive effects of the government's recent decision to increase the country's minimum wages.

Malaysian MP special assistant Oscar Ling commented this week that illegal online gambling is the principal cause of the low standard of living experienced by Malaysians. He explained that a substantial number of citizens waste their incomes on online gambling activities and as such the money they receive from salaries won't reach domestic markets.

Ling also believes that illegal online gambling will eliminate the positive influence of the government's recent decision to increase country's minimum wages. Ling explained that he fears that the extra income citizens will receive from their bumped salaries will be spent on internet casino activities.

Based on these, Ling suggests that the government takes more serious measures against illegal online gambling activities. Likewise, Ling proposes to seriously restrict citizen's rights in regards to legal land-based lottery activities and games.

Ling said that:"I observe that normal business activities here have very much slowed down because they are seriously affected by the illegal gambling. I urge the government to seriously look at the issue especially as the Chinese New Year is approaching."

Ling's beliefs are however not shared by online casino gaming experts. Industry analysts say that even in countries where online casino gaming is legally sanctioned it does not influences the economy in any substantial way at all.

Generally, only an extremely small fraction of the population of a country is actively playing online for real money. In Malaysia the incidence of online gambling is actually considerably lower than in most other countries due to the fact that in Malaysia this practice is not regulated by the law.

Special Assistant Oscar Ling's wrong assessment of the situation may however be excused by the fact that by profession Ling is a pharmacist and not an expert on economics. Still, it's believed that Malaysia will continue its anti-online casino gaming campaign and won't decide to regulate this practice anytime soon.
