　　Recently, the European Commission made a law to regulate online gambling behavior. This is a law that was the complaint triggered the review.

　　FollowThe European Commission extended today its review period for the new UK online gambling law proposal that intends to tax online gambling operators at the point of consumption. The review was triggered by a complaint submitted by Malta.

　　It is reported that one of the European Commission, called Malta appeal the UK government's intention to implement a new online gambling law by December 2014. With the new law, the United Kingdom intends to force offshore operators to pay taxes in the country.

　　Malta however argues that implementing such a law is against European Union legislation because it would give an unfair advantage to genuine UK ventures over offshore companies. The detailed complaint that was submitted to the EC was however not yet made public.

　　Malta is at this moment one of the largest hubs for online gambling companies in Europe. If the UK would implement the new law proposal, many operators currently located in Malta would be determined to relocate to the UK instead. Such a move would result in a substantial loss of tax revenues for Malta.At this moment online gambling operators licensed in Malta are able to offer their services in the UK as well since the UK Gambling Commission recognizes the licenses issued by other European Economic Area and EU member states. This also means that such companies do not have to pay taxes in the UK.However, the UK government's most recent online gambling law proposal intends to change this. By December 2014, the United Kingdom intends to implement a new online gambling law that would force offshore online gaming companies to pay taxes in the UK as well.

　　In principle such a move is indeed against European Union laws because it hinders the free movement of services between member states. However the UK government justifies its decision of requiring online gambling companies to have a UK license by arguing that the licenses issued by other countries don't provide adequate safety measures.Malta and other jurisdictions in this situation however claim that their licenses require operators to follow the exact same safety standards as the ones requested by the UK Gambling Commission. However, in this case, the requirements of Malta and other jurisdictions, their licenses require the operator to re-consider the adoption by the UK Gambling Commission in accordance with the requirements of the same safety standards.
