The French mobile casino online poker popularity soared

Recent statistics released by the French online gambling regulator ARJEL reveal that the popularity of mobile gambling is continually increasing in the country while the market as a whole is stagnating.

New statistics published by France's online gambling regulator ARJEL reveal that in Q4 2012 a total of 381,000 players used mobile devices to participate in online gambling activities offered by operators with a valid French license. In Q4 2011 this number was just 166,500.

Approximately 214,000 of the total of 381,000 players participated in mobile poker activities using smartphones. Around 32,000 used tablets in order to play poker online in France during the final quarter of 2012. This means that around 27% of the total active online gamblers in France use mobile platforms.

While mobile gambling clearly continues to grow in France, the online gambling market as a whole entered a period of stagnation caused by improper regulations and unfairly high online gambling corporate taxes. The industry most seriously affected is online poker.

The ARJEL revealed that in 2012 the revenues generated by online poker companies were just of €188 million which is a significant decline of 13% compared to the results achieved by companies in 2011. This decline is not expected to be reversed in the near future.

Online gaming observers argue that this decline is caused by faulty regulations such as the rule according to which online poker operators with a French license are obliged to separate their French players and liquidity from their international players and liquidity.

As it turns out a market that of the size of France's is unable to generate enough players to ensure constantly ongoing online poker tournaments and filled up cash game tables. As a consequence of this, many French players either decided to register and play a unlicensed operators or abandon online poker as a whole.

Due to the above, some reputable online gaming operators such as even 888.com announced recently that they would leave the French online gaming market. The departure of reputable companies will leave French players with limited choices, further driving the market towards decline.
