BELGIUM AWARDS THREE NEW ONLINE GAMBLING LICENSES

The Belgian Gaming Commission awarded three new online gaming licenses to three operators. The operators in question are Napoleon Gaming, Stargames SA and Lucky Games.

Three new real money online gaming companies join the ranks of Belgium-licensed casino operators. The first company on the list is Napoleon Games that recently teamed up with Unibet subsidiary Kambi in order to be able to offer online sports betting services in the country.

The second company on the list, Stargames SA, intends to expand its Belgian operations by offering sports betting services as well. In order to be able to offer online sports betting services, the venture was required to extend its license. The last company on the list, Lucky Games, intends to offer real money arcade games to Belgian clients.

Another company that's still on the waiting list to receive a Belgian license is bwin.party digital entertainment. Until just recently bwin.party was blacklisted in Belgium because it refused to apply for a license and at the same time continued to offer its services to Belgian players.

Bwin.party always argued that Belgium's current online gambling law violates European Union regulations. However after realizing that the European Commission will unfortunately continue to ignore this case, bwin.party decided to change its approach.

Recently the company announced that it managed to form a partnership agreement with the French and Belgian Partouche land-based casino group. This is because Belgium only awards online gambling licenses to genuine Belgian land-casinos or online casino companies that formed a partnership with such casinos.

With this measure Belgium intends to offer an advantage to national casino and gaming companies on the market. This is also the measure that determined bwin.party in the past to refuse to apply for a license claiming that such a regulation is against European Union laws.

Surprisingly the European Commission itself recognized that Belgium's online gambling law is against European Union regulations. Still, as explained above, it appears that the European Commission will ignore the issue, most likely because online gambling does not represent a high priority at this moment.
