Two major poker game contests are staging in the city amid stagnant market conditions, as the gaming sector is eyeing the card as possible extra impetus to the slowing revenue from traditional bread-winner games like baccarat.

The Asian Poker Tour Macau will be held from tomorrow , from the 25th to the 31st of July 2012 at Galaxy's StarWorld Hotel & Casino. It will feature a Main Event with a buy-in of HKD 25,000, six Satellites and twelve Side Events.

In the next major poker tournament, by Macau Poker Cup , the contents' manager Mr Fred Leung told Macau Daily Times that it will take place from September 7 to 16, with the prize pool set to exceed HKD 4.5 million. The organizer did not wish to comment on whether these poker contests will compete with each other, but some players are participating in both tournaments.

The event is the finale of Macau Poker Cup's regular contest, and has participants from Macau, Hong Kong, the Mainland, South East Asian countries including Malaysia, and some from as far away as Europe .

With gaming revenue continuing to show downward pressure in terms of visitors and bets, the industry has been eyeing alternatives to boost income. In addition to “mahjong”, poker also proves to be a major income earner in the industry, with studies showing poker players possess typically higher salaries and education backgrounds. For the Asian Poker Tour Macau, the buy-in for the Main Event is HKD 25,000, with the base currency for all tournaments during APT Macau being Hong Kong Dollars, with a one percent charity and two percent staff charge on the Main Event, and two percent staff charge on all Side Events. Spectators can watch the tournament from designated areas in the hotel-casino.
